Security Camera Specs
Most of us are working outside of the home and while this pandemic proves that many also are able to work from home, it is time for us to go back to the old routine. Leaving the house unattended can be a challenge because we don’t know what happens during the time and it is sometimes concerning especially for people who live in an area with a reputation. To allow homeowners to always be informed of what happens on their property, we can try installing a security camera.
They are getting more affordable but also easy to install and almost everyone can do it in minutes. The only requirement is you will need to have Wi-Fi at home since they are going to be connected to the internet for streaming and notification purposes. Most cameras are coming with the same features but some can be more reliable whether it is based on the level of video quality, advanced features, or even the price point.
When it comes to security cameras, what you may want to consider first is their resolution because not every camera has the same resolution and video quality. The minimum requirement of 1080p is to make sure we can watch the footage and notice details when needed such as people’s faces and plate numbers or small animals etc. There are options up to 4K nowadays but do note that if you store locally, higher resolution costs more room to keep since the file size will be much bigger.
Next is the field of view which is the width of the camera when taking the image. We can imagine fisheye have a very large field of view but for security cameras, a range of 130 degree should be adequate. Smaller field of view can be chosen for a place or spot with narrower surface and vice versa. For example, if this camera will be mounted at the front door, we want to capture as much as possible and getting a 160 degree angle like Arlo Pro 4 Vs Pro 3 will be very ideal for a complete coverage.
In addition, the frame and nighttime performance of the camera need to be considered as well. This is because lower frame rates or anything less than 15 fps will be susceptible to motion blur so it is a waste of footage we can’t get the required details on them. Night time mode is equally necessary because with less light means less details too and it is necessary to make sure that we can get the details even when recording at night.

About Arlo Pro 4 and Essential
Now when you are ready to buy a new camera, it is time to see what the market has to offer because there are so many of them out there and you may like one, two or more to consider first. If this is your first camera, we recommend getting one with an easy to install system as well as offering all the features you need outside the image quality. There are more than plenty and most of them are pretty easy to set up.
Arlo for example is one of the most popular options when it comes to security cameras and they have various models to consider as well. This brand is a great option if you want to have advanced detection because they are very well-known for the features that you can find on all of their new security cameras. The price is also competitive for the camera only but do note that they require subscription to access the rest of the features.
Arlo Pro 4 and Essential are two from different line and as you can guess, the Essential is a basic model so if budget is the main reason then we will recommend to get this model but for the subscription, it will be the same to Arlo Pro 4 in terms of the amount we need to pay per plan or camera installed; it is currently about $3 per month for one camera. The main difference between the two will be their resolution on camera.
Arlo Pro 4 is the same as Pro 3, the previous model but now it is more convenient and Essential is the same in this category. The two can offer various detection features that we can choose from paying the subscription but we do think the camera itself is better on the Pro 4 based on the mechanism. It is overall more user friendly and convenient especially when it comes to the battery management.
Arlo Pro 4 and Essential Design
Before getting into what the Arlo Pro 4 and Essential can offer, let’s see the unit first and they are very much the same or similar to each other. The housing is oval and slightly longer to the back like a cup with the main camera housed inside this white plastic. The best thing about Arlo cameras is that they are waterproof for outdoor installation. The two are identical with one major difference and it is the housing mechanism.
The unique part about Pro 4 and also the Ultra 2 is that we can remove the camera only when changing battery or maintenance. In this case it will be useful when you install it somewhere high as we can press a button at the bottom and the camera will pop out slightly so we can pull it and remove it completely from the housing. With Essential we can’t do this, so for charging, unless you install a solar panel then we have to take the camera off the mount completely.
Arlo Pro 4 and Essential Image Quality
Now for the most important part, let’s see what the Arlo Pro 4 and Essential can offer starting from the image quality and as it has been mentioned above, the main difference is on camera because Pro 4 is a 2K and Essential is a 1080p variant. Side by side the footage looks quite different and we want to mention that Essential is 130 degree wide angle while Pro 4 is 160 degree so the object will look closer from the Essential camera.
Another difference is the footage looks brighter under the daylight from Essential and it looks more saturated as well while Pro 4 has this cool tone to it so it may look better for some people. The difference in resolution also makes Pro 4 sharper when you look closer and we do think Essential exposes more of the shadowy area too. The nighttime recording is about the same however and they do have a spotlight so we can see people’s faces or details better.
Arlo Pro 4 and Essential Features
Next let’s talk about the features that you can get from Arlo Pro 4 and Essential since they are very much the same. To use these cameras to the fullest, we need to pay at least $3 for one camera or $10 for more cameras. There are currently 2 plans available which are 2K and 4K variants so users with these cameras will choose the 2K which means it saves up footage up to 2K resolution. Since Essential is 1080p, it will only save up to 1080p as well.
Without the subscription you can only do live streaming and receive notifications but with the subscription you can store the footage in cloud for up to 30 days, get rich and interactive notification, person, vehicle, and animal detection, package detection, activity zone, etc.
Arlo Pro 4 and Essential Setup
Lastly for the setup, both Arlo Pro 4 and Essential are also very easy to get started with and the reason is because you can directly connect them to the Wi-Fi without having to use a hub; you can if you want however. The process will take around 7 to 10 minutes depending on how familiar you are with the system but it is very easy and intuitive. In case you will need to store the footage locally, since there is no memory slot on the camera itself, we can use the hub to access this feature.
Arlo Pro 4 Vs Essential
Both Arlo Pro 4 and Essential are very similar in terms of features because Arlo is based on subscription so we will need to pay for the higher abilities especially when it comes to notification and detection. The differences on camera are higher resolution and more convenient Arlo Pro 4 with its magnetic charging, catch feature, and higher video resolution. But, the nighttime and audio are very much the same.
The decision is all yours and it is wise to get the one that you will be able to use conveniently. If budget is the main concern we can easily recommend Essential since it records good footage and features wise we have the same subscription to other higher cameras in the line.
