Buying a Security Camera

The world is chaotic and there is only so much we can do to protect ourselves. Even with a proper security system there is always a chance of crime happening in your property and the most common threat we are trying to avoid is probably burglary or theft. As a homeowner who is not always in their house, we often wonder whether the house is safe being left unattended and in addition, some areas may have certain reputation or higher risk of crime that is concerning.

In modern days there are so many devices designed to protect the user but in terms of home security, the camera is probably the most useful. This device is meant for monitoring and deterring purposes and while it won’t do anything to the suspect, we will be more prepared and have the footage to settle the matters later. Security cameras also become simpler today with wireless connectivity and even wireless power that help it to be more versatile and helpful in application.

What to note about buying a new security camera is that you will need to consider where to put the device whether it is outdoor, indoor, on the front door or on another part of the house and property. The camera will need to be weathershield when you are installing it outdoors but we need to consider the installation process too because not all cameras have the same convenient mounting option and there are also options that are designed for a more specific use.

You also have to choose the power source and there are only two to choose because most cameras are either powered directly or using a battery. Both options have the pros and cons depending on which seems to work better in your application. Direct power is very convenient because as long as there is no power outage the camera will still be on yet, they are more complicated to install since we have to think about cable management too or routing the cable, especially if it is installed outside.

The battery powered is like a plug-and-play which means it is more convenient whether you want to put it up above, outdoors, or inside the house; no need to think about the power source. But, depending on the battery capacity, they will run out of power quite fast too and users need to remember to replace it which means having at least two batteries for each camera is a must. The app will remind you when the battery is low however so it is easy to keep in track.

About Arlo Pro 4 and Ultra 2

Now when you are ready to find a dedicated security camera for the house, it is time to see what the market has to offer. There are so many different options to choose from based on which seems to fit in your budget or application but it is wise to start with the factors above just to help shorten the amount of options that will work well in your house or properties. There are also so many different brands to choose from in varying price ranges.

One of them is Arlo and if you have browsed around the current popular security cameras, we are sure you also find this brand in different sections of the list starting from budget range to the high-end cameras. We personally like them for ease of use and Arlo is very well-known for their convenience but we may have different opinions. Their battery powered cameras are our favorite since you can place them almost anywhere to get a monitoring function from the device.

For those who are also looking to buy a wireless camera that can be installed conveniently whether it is indoor or outdoor, the Arlo Pro 4 and Ultra 2 are two of the most ideal options to consider. These cameras are very similar in terms of ease of use because the two are battery powered meaning we can install them almost anywhere and people seem to choose them as an outdoor camera because they are versatile. The latter however, is noticeably more expensive.

The package comes with two cameras and a hub but you can buy a single camera with the Pro 4. The most noticeable difference when it comes to image quality will be because Ultra 2 is a 4K model while the Pro 4 is a 2K camera. In comparison, the image quality does look different but not by much and if you need to buy a single camera or don’t really need the highest resolution, we will recommend getting the Pro 4 instead for the price and convenience.

Arlo Pro 4 and Ultra 2 Design

Before getting into what these cameras can offer, let’s take a look into the unit first and the most noticeable difference is probably because the Ultra 2 is coming with a hub and there are two cameras in the package. These cameras will need the hub to work but Pro 4 is not which is why we think it is more convenient. The housing is properly protected to allow you to install these cameras outdoors and depending on the application, the attachment may be required.

The camera itself is pretty compact and carries this egg-like shape which is also modern. In fact, if you mix the Pro 4 with Ultra 2, chances are we can’t set them apart because the shape and size is exactly the same. If installed inside the house we can just put the camera on a table or similar flat surface while for outdoor application it is often required to use the extension arm or attachment. Arlo Pro 4 and Ultra 2 Image Quality

Now for the most important part, let’s see what the Arlo Pro 4 and Ultra 2 can offer starting from the image quality because many of us are buying a camera to see what happens or to monitor the area within the property. These cameras are very different in terms of resolution because the Ultra 2 is a 4K camera while the Pro 4 is a 2K camera. In real life, they can be a bit similar. Overall we do think the tone of these cameras are blue-ish or has a cool tone to it.

Side by side you will notice that the image quality is more similar than different including the color and the one we notice is that when it comes to darker parts such as people’s faces as they get closer to the camera but in an angle from the light source. Somehow the Ultra 2 can still give slightly more details in the area. As for the microphone, the Pro 4 is not filtering the audio as clean as the Ultra 2 but both are still very reliable.

Arlo Pro 4 and Ultra 2 Features

Next we want to talk about the features that you can get from these cameras but one thing we want to mention first is that most of them will be subscription based so you will need to pay for the plan to enjoy these features. Currently, the no plan or free is only covering live streaming and notifications from the app. There is a Premiere Plan which is 2K resolution and Elite Plan for 4K resolution; both plans offer 30 days of cloud video history.

The additional features that you can get from paying any of these plans are cloud storage, rich interface notifications, person detection, vehicle detection, animal detection, package detection, cloud/activity detection, and emergency service. The current price for these plans are $9.99 per month for 2K service and $14.99 per month for the 4K service which can cover up to 6 cameras or $3 and $5 for single camera only.

Arlo Pro 4 and Ultra 2 Storage

Now for the storage which is necessary too because you may think that we can only use the cloud to save video and this is true for the Pro 4 because this camera no longer comes with a base station unlike the Pro 3 and Ultra 2. The advantage is it becomes more convenient but, it also costs the system a local storage in which you can find on the base itself. With Ultra 2 we can put a micro SD card at the bottom and Pro 3 has a USB port at the back.

Arlo Pro 4 Vs Ultra 2

There are so many good security cameras and these two are some of them. The differences between Arlo Pro 4 and Ultra 2 are the resolution and storage. The Pro 4 is a 2K camera and while its image quality is already good, the Ultra 2 is slightly better at handling the shadowy area. The microphone is also quieter on the Ultra 2 while Pro 4 may capture too much wind noise. In addition, since Ultra 2 has a base, we can store the footage locally as well.

- See a bigger picture - The security camera has a wide 160° diagonal viewing angle lens for auto image correction and reduction of the fisheye effect to make this surveillance camera ideal for protecting medium to larger spaces

- Smarter alerts, quicker action - Set up your surveillance & security cameras with an Arlo Secure plan, receive notifications for people, vehicles, and packages so you can react quickly, right from your phone

Both Arlo Pro 4 and Ultra 2 are good cameras but you have to choose wisely because they also need a subscription. Personally we recommend the Pro 4 and its subscription or you can add the Pro 3 base as well to store locally since it is possible to combine the camera with its older base.
