Picking Security Camera
We are always cautious when it comes to security because the need to feel safe is necessary for a human being and it is probably part of our instinct. In the past, we used to install security cameras on strategic places to monitor our house whether it is on the inside or on your front door and back yard. While there are still many people who are using this older technology, with advanced and huge migration from wired to wireless technology, we are slowly leaving the old security cameras.
Today, there are a lot of manufacturers and brands offering security cameras and one of the including web cam. Both of them are very similar to each other but also different because the focus of web cameras is not for security yet there are many of them that comes with the similar capabilities like a security cameras. For example a camera built for security system will most often capable of notifying the owner when there is something triggering the sensor.
While this can be a small distinction, as the user we need to pick the one that match our preference. For those who need a standalone DIY security camera route, this type of features is the only way we can have a real-time monitoring rather than staring at our feed all day which is most of the time impossible for we have much to do in the day. Unlike a professional providers, there is nothing behind the monitoring service or camera so when seeing an intruder, we are the one who need to call the law enforcement.

It means an interruption to the signal may affect how the camera’s functioning. However, there are cameras that can works with cellular network such as AT&T and Verizon. Because people are more into online shopping today, it can be a good start as well to see what the other are interested in or used because the one pleased many others may have the certain treats you like. One of the most popular security camera used today are from Arlo and if you have been lurking on the net looking for cameras, chances are you already familiar with this one. Currently, two of their newest models are being best-selling among other good cameras out there.
These models are the famous Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 which is released around 2017 which is already few years ago but with the capabilities and features they come, it is no wonder people still picking these two as their top choices. Arlo cameras are never cheap but their capabilities are practically useful and trusted. Being a newest addition, we can hope more from Pro 2 such as a better video quality which is very useful to zoom in faces and even vehicle plate number.
Arlo Pro and Pro 2 Design
From the outside, in our opinion there is no much features separating both Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 because they are visibly similar to each other measuring about 3.1 x 1.9 x 2.8-inch. They have Arlo’s Signature design with a smooth, curved, ovoid body with a black lens and face. For option, we can choose the set from only one camera up to 6 but if you need more, we can always purchase an add-on cameras separately. The camera itself has no leg or stand so they does look low-profile.
To mount the cameras later, there is a small round magnetic mount we can screw to the wall which is included with the cameras but if user need another mounting option, there are several types of it both from Arlo and from third-part vendors. When you check the camera’s face, here we can see that both of Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 are also featured with eight night-vision infrared LEDs surrounding the lens as well as an indicator LED that blinks when battery charge, syncing and updating firmware.
Since we are going to place these cameras outdoor, another things we have to check is their protection against weather and thankfully both of them are weatherproof and waterproof to an IP65 rating so we can use them indoors or outdoors.
Arlo Pro and Pro 2 Video and Audio Quality
While Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 are sound very promising, as a security camera, just like anything used to capture images or record moving objects, the most important thing is the resolution and audio quality since to monitor something, we have to make sure our eyes can see the object clearly. This is also what separate both model the most for as it has been mentioned above, the original Pro is supporting a 720p video quality while the newer Pro 2 is callable of capturing even better at 1080p.
When tested, taken from Tomsguide the Pro 2 indeed show a bigger video quality but may not as good as what we expect. Its original version Arlo Pro have a lower resolution at 720p and its 130-degree wide-angle glass lens as well as 1/3” 1MP AP CMOS sensor can capture a good video moreover when placed under a good lighting because it can produce a very good, realistic color and excellent contrast as well as great detail which is similar with the bigger 1080p in Pro2.
Arlo Pro 2 details are easy to discern and has a good color with exposure but it is only when viewed through a smartphone like Android or iOS devices. When you try moving to a PC bigger screen through the web portal, the highlights were blown and pixelated. Comparing them side by side, the original Pro indeed have smaller video but the contrast and exposure seem better in that version. What’s concerning is this also happen in the night vision.
Speaker quality on both Arlo Pro and Arlo Pro 2 are very good because their audio is capable of taking a clear and distinct sound with a good volume. Their volume is also loud enough to hear whatever on the other side is talking whether it is person or a pet voices.
Arlo Pro and Pro 2 Security Features
On the security features, these cameras come with an excellent controls which we can use on both desktop and from smartphone. The default Modes are Armed, Disarmed, Schedule and Geofencing. We do love the Schedule Mode because it allow the user to create different time periods for each day and easily repeat them on specific days. We can also add as many custom Modes as we want but they can only operate one at a time.
For those who are looking for the motion activated trigger, we are going to activate the Armed Mode because this mode will detect motion or sound based on sensitivity we can adjust manually. When there is an event happens, this mode may also record video which the length can be defined as well from 10 seconds to 2 minutes, turn the base station’s siren or do nothing at all. If you are away from home, we can pick to set the camera to send notification on our mobile device and or email alerts.
In addition, we can pick Custom Mode since we can have one camera’s motion or sound detection trigger a recording by another camera on the system for example, a driveway cameras alert will cause the front-door camera to record video.
Now, let’s compare Arlo Pro and Pro 2. As you may already know, the prominent difference between these models is their video resolution while the rest stays as good from the original Pro. This difference may looks tempting but when the video is viewed with a larger screen, the quality is not as good as the 720p version especially on the contrast and exposure.
Arlo Pro vs Pro 2
All in all, the decision is all yours to make because we may have different preference and taste or what’s important. If you are more often viewing from small screen like from a smartphone, the new Arlo Pro 2 is a good choice but if you don’t really mind about the small video resolution, we do prefer the older Arlo Pro for it is still a good, more affordable choice.
