Design and Build Quality
Zmodo comes with a typical shape of a security camera. It is relatively big and bulky. However, it looks modern and stylish. The front side is black, whereas the rest of the housing is glossy white. On the back, there is a protruding antenna which is apparently for the Wi-Fi. See also: Zmodo vs Ring.

The installation is quite simple and easy, thanks to the included mounting kit. You can put it on the outside wall or on a tree in your yard. That said, it can’t be battery-powered; it has a power cord and requires a dedicated power outlet. So, you may need an extension cable if the installation is too far away. The Zmodo outdoor security camera is completely weatherproof with an IP65 rating. It can withstand various environmental conditions in any season.

Nest has a smaller, sleeker look. The size is quite smaller than Zmodo. Hence, you will find it easier to hide if you want to set up a discreet installation. It is definitely a good-looking unit. The front side is black, while the housing and the cable are white.

Nest is also weatherproof with an IP65 rating, so it should be able to withstand various weather conditions in any season. Just like Zmodo, the Nest outdoor security camera also works with Wi-Fi but requires a power cord and dedicated power outlet, as it can’t be battery-powered.

Features
Zmodo already supports motion detection. It will send a notification to your smartphone whenever it detects a motion. It also has customizable motion detection zones, so that you can exclude the places where routine activities take place to reduce false alerts. Unfortunately, the Zmodo outdoor security camera doesn’t have two-way audio. It only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.

Nest also has motion detection, and it can also send a notification to your smartphone when motion is detected. However, the customizable motion detection zones are more advanced. You can adjust the shape (instead of a basic rectangular shape) to fit the exact area. In addition, Nest also has two-way audio. It supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi.

Cloud Storage and Subscription
Both Zmodo vs Nest save their recordings in their respective cloud services. Unfortunately, neither of them is able to save videos locally in a memory card or internal storage. So, these models must be used with the cloud services.

Zmodo has a free basic tier which will keep your recordings for 36 hours. That’s pretty good. Just don’t forget to move important video clips to your own storage. There are two paid tiers, the 7-day plan (costs $4.99 per month or $49.90 per year) and the 30-day plan (costs $9.99 per month or $99.90 per year).

Nest does not have a free service plan. If you don’t want to subscribe to a plan, you can still see the live view, and you can also set the camera to take a snapshot whenever it detects a motion or sound. You will be able to see the snapshots of the last three hours.

There are three subscription options available on Nest. First, there is a 5-day plan which costs $5 per month or $50 per year. Second, there is a 10-day plan which costs $10 per month or $100 per year. Third, there is a 30-day plan which costs $30 per month or $300 per year. Compared to Zmodo, Nest’s cloud storage is indeed more expensive.

Video Quality
So, between Zmodo vs Nest, which smart security camera does have the best video quality? There are several factors that we can compare here, such as the resolution and frame rate, the field of view, and the night vision performance. While Zmodo is good, Nest is generally better.

Zmodo has a maximum resolution of 720p HD. The images are quite sharp and clear. The color quality is very good. The colors are solid and accurate. Unfortunately, the field of view is quite narrow – only 81 degrees. That may be sufficient for covering an indoor space or a small yard; however, you probably want a wider coverage to monitor your home’s surrounding.

The night vision performance of Zmodo is fairly good. It has a maximum range of 65 feet. While in the night vision mode, the images are quite sharp and crisp.

Nest is definitely better, as it has a maximum resolution of 1080p HD. The images are very sharp and detailed. You can clearly see the facial features of a person. The camera also supports up to 8X digital zooming. The colors and brightness are excellent. In addition, Nest has a much wider field of view, which is 130 degrees. The night vision is good and usable, although only with a maximum range of about 40 feet.

Smart Home Integration
Zmodo doesn’t work with Alexa or Google Home. It is also incompatible with most smart home systems and IFTTT services. Hence, it is not an ideal choice if you are looking to set up a comprehensive security system that integrates seamlessly with the other smart devices in your home. It only works with the MeShare app, through which you can control various smart home devices.

Nest is great because it can integrate with other smart systems. It works with Alexa, so that you can use voice commands and stream the video feed to the Echo Show device. It definitely works with Google Home, since the Nest company is actually owned by Google. According to the users, it is compatible with some IFTTT services.
